In celebration of the BFI's Black Star season, The Orange Soda Film Club presents 'Women Save The World' a double screening of cult classics The Wiz and Coffy.

The Wiz
A musical adventure released 1978 The Wiz is an urban reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an entirely African-American cast. The film follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy twenty-four-year-old Harlem, New York City, schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles an alternative fantasy version of the Big Apple. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home.

Coffy
1973 American blaxploitation film written and directed by American filmmaker Jack Hill. The story is about a black female vigilante played by Pam Grier. Nurse "Coffy" Coffin seeks revenge for her younger sister's getting hooked on drugs and having to live in a rehabilitation home, a product of the drug underworld, mob bosses, and a chain of violence that exists in her city. The film opens with Coffy showing her vigilante nature by killing a drug dealer using her sexuality as an attractive and athletic woman willing to do anything for a drug fix.
